Payment Policy

Lessons are generally charged on a monthly basis, with payment made by bank transfer by the 1st of each month. The monthly rate is more economical than paying for individual lessons.

If a student needs to miss a lesson, a make-up lesson can be arranged at a later date, ensuring that the student does not lose the lesson that has already been paid for.

Communication Outside Lesson Hours

Parents may contact me via LINE during working hours if the student has questions regarding lessons or practice. They may send a photo of the sheet music or the specific section in question, and I will provide written explanations or guidance as soon as possible, allowing the student to continue practicing correctly.

Online Lessons

I primarily use Google Meet for online lessons. Students are recommended to have two devices, such as a laptop or computer together with a tablet, so that two screens can be used simultaneously for viewing sheet music, learning materials, and demonstrations.

No additional software is required apart from Google Meet. A good-quality camera and microphone are recommended to ensure clear communication and an effective online learning experience.

Trial Lessons

I offer 3–4 trial lessons, charged at the regular lesson rate, with payment made after each lesson.

During the trial period, I focus on assessing the student’s existing skills, musical understanding, and learning style in order to identify their current level and areas for development. This allows me to design and adapt an appropriate long-term learning plan for each individual student.

Refund Policy

As a general policy, lesson fees that have already been paid are non-refundable. However, in the event of an emergency or exceptional circumstances that prevent me from continuing to provide lessons, I am willing to provide a full refund as appropriate.

Progress Monitoring and Parent Communication

I regularly monitor and update parents on their child’s progress, based on practical skills, musical understanding, practice habits, and consistency in learning.

If specific areas require additional attention, I provide parents with appropriate feedback and practice recommendations. When necessary, I am also available to arrange a meeting or phone call with parents to discuss the student’s progress and establish an appropriate plan for further development.

Teaching Materials and Resources

I use a wide range of teaching books and resources, selected according to each student’s level, ability, age, and learning goals. These include Poco Piano, Hal Leonard, and Alfred, as well as age-appropriate resources for young learners, such as music flash cards, educational music games, and Orff percussion instruments.

These resources support a structured and engaging learning process while developing music reading, rhythm, listening, instrumental skills, and overall musical understanding through a variety of age-appropriate activities.

Teaching Approach

I believe that effective music education should integrate both theoretical knowledge and practical application, as the two are closely interconnected. Music theory enables students to understand what they are playing, while practical experience allows them to apply that knowledge effectively.

In general, I place approximately 70% emphasis on practical training and 30% on theory. However, this balance is flexible and depends on each student’s age, ability, experience, and learning objectives. For students preparing for ABRSM or Trinity examinations, for example, greater emphasis may be placed on music theory, aural skills, and other examination-related components. For students whose primary goal is to develop their playing skills, lessons may focus more heavily on practical performance and application.

Before developing a learning plan, I place great importance on assessing each student’s existing skills, individual learning needs, and personal goals. Every student learns at a different pace and has different strengths, interests, and challenges. When a student progresses quickly, I increase the level of challenge and introduce more advanced material to ensure continued development without making the lessons repetitive or insufficiently challenging.

For students who require more time to learn, I adjust the pace of instruction rather than rushing them into more advanced material. I break complex concepts into smaller, more manageable steps and provide appropriate exercises to strengthen their understanding and confidence before moving on to the next stage.

If a student does not understand a concept the first time, I do not consider this a failure on the student’s part. Instead, I consider whether my method of explanation is appropriate for that particular learner. I may explain the concept in a different way, provide additional examples, demonstrate the technique, or introduce simpler exercises before gradually progressing to more complex material.

With more than 20 years of experience teaching music to both children and adults, as well as extensive experience preparing students for ABRSM and Trinity examinations and university-level music studies, I believe that a teacher’s role extends beyond simply teaching students to “play an instrument.” A good music teacher should help students understand music, develop effective practice habits, and become increasingly independent learners.

Ultimately, my goal is not limited to examination results or competition achievements. I aim to provide students with a strong musical foundation that enables them to continue developing their skills, knowledge, and appreciation of music over the long term.

Practice Materials and Assignments

I provide weekly practice assignments using both pieces from the student’s Lesson Book and additional pieces selected according to the student’s level, ability, and individual goals.

Assignments focus primarily on practical training and are reviewed and discussed in the following lesson, allowing me to provide feedback, address areas for improvement, and monitor the student’s progress continuously.

Lesson Structure

A typical lesson consists of reviewing previous material, introducing new concepts, demonstration and practical training, as well as questions, feedback, and correction of mistakes. The balance between these components is adjusted according to each student’s ability and learning goals.

I place greater emphasis on hands-on practice rather than lengthy explanations. I explain only what is necessary, demonstrate the correct technique, and then allow the student to apply it immediately. This approach helps students develop both understanding and practical skills through active learning.
